Big Float project in Finland – building settling ponds

In Askola, Finland, there’s an ongoing project where contractor builds settling ponds as well as natural habitats for wildlife. Maansiirto Robin Saari Oy is working on this kind project at this location and it’s already been four weeks of work. The plan for the area included two separate settling ponds. One has been completed, and the excavation for the second is almost finished.

Maansiirto Robin Saari Oy has been using Big Float pontoons for two years and has completed projects in Southern Finland. They are also specialized in working on offshore islands in Southern Finland that are connected by ferry to the mainland. During the winter, work is paused because the ferries stop running due to sea ice.

Since the Big Float is so efficient, it is beneficial for contractors to use project-based pricing rather than hourly rates. Big Float pontoons have such low surface pressure that they don’t damage peat or other soil surfaces, which is essential for the current project. Robin Saari says, ”This job couldn’t be done without the Remu Big Float because regular excavator tracks would break the peat and soil layers.”

Maansiirto Robin Saari Oy is very satisfied with the Remu Big Float pontoons, especially appreciating the fast and easy retraction and extension of the pontoon undercarriage width. Extension of the pontoons to working position takes only one minute, and Robin Saari recommends cleaning the inner area of the pontoons after use to prevent debris and mud from getting into the spreading bar channels. The customer is also very satisfied with the Remu Big Float’s heavy-duty track system, which performs well in both dryland and wet conditions. They have only had to adjust the tracks tension once during the Remu Big Float E22’s lifetime, which is already exceeding 2000 working hours. No parts or components required replacement so far.
